Code Enigma a community of creative souls and the technically brilliant, dedicated to making the world wide web better. We are a Drupal development agency and located in the heart of London.

Code Enigma – Drupal Agency in London

We deliver and support accessible web-based solutions with creative design and robust code on sleek, secure infrastructure; allowing clients to tell their engaging stories.

Code Enigma began in 2010, when we called ourselves a web agency, but these days we’re so much more. We avoid outsourcing and use freelance staff periodically to enhance our team, but otherwise we’re organic.

Our base is in the heart of London, but we made the conscious decision to work as a distributed company. Code Enigma reside across the UK, France, Spain, Argentina and Australia. This opens us up culturally and educationally, and we have access to the best talent across time zones (which is great for our responsiveness). We embrace diversity as a driver for creativity.

Our Services

Design

We not only look at your brand persona and bring it visually to life, but collaborate with you to establish your user needs and business objectives, then suggest how we can meet those with our skills. We tell your story through striking design, compelling typography and beautiful imagery that fits your unique identity. Plus, we ensure accessibility to reach your entire audience.

Development

Our agency uses open source software like Drupal and Symfony for the flexibility to produce a truly custom, high performance solution. We can refresh dated sites or build something entirely new. We ensure design and code dovetail smoothly. We test responsiveness across devices and ensure standards-compliance, which ultimately results in the best experience and a lasting impression on users.

Hosting

Code Enigma are backed by AWS, indisputably the world leader in Enterprise data centres and cloud services. We offer the exceptional resilience, scalability and security of AWS, tailored just for you. Our Amazon-trained systems administrators connect the pieces, store your infrastructure in code and support your developers in building robust, end-to-end systems. Our Managed AWS service starts from £100 a month and provides full control of your infrastructure, at a fraction of the cost of onsite Sys Admins.

Support

Support isn’t just fixing bugs, updating modules and switching things off and on again. Our design, development and hosting teams have a unique skill set, because we have a depth of experience working across multiple sectors. Code Enigma offer support for every service we offer. If you need additional resource or expertise, or to completely outsource, we can support you in a monthly trainer package with the option to purchase 5 hour blocks.

Dan Smith – Head of Support

Drupal profile

Jamie Wiseman – Head of SysOps

Jamie can be found heading up Code Enigma’s systems team, making sure everyone has enough tea, coffee or juice to get the job done, responding to clients and generally making sure our networking, servers, and databases are all happy.

Drupal profile

Greg Harvey – Director

Greg’s current role sees him providing technical expertise during the consultancy phase of larger development projects and leading Code Enigma’s rapidly-growing devops, support and hosting team. He also sometimes oversees the technical aspects of development projects.

Drupal profile

Justine Pocock – Head of Design

Justine came to Code Enigma in 2017 to take responsibility for the development and growth of the design team.

Sean Burlington – Technical Lead

Sean has a background in development and systems administration with roles such as Head of Systems Design, Lead Drupal Developer and even Director of a small, London-based web development company.

Sean tends to focus on whatever is needed to make a project work. At times this has been technical and other times addressing political issues so that the technical ones can be solved.

This has led him naturally into management and now leads our very capable team. He enjoys the ability this brings to maximise opportunities both for the company and individuals on the team.

LinkedIn

Miguel Jaq – SysAdmin Consultant

Mig has been a Sys Admin consultant for Code Enigma since inception. He designed and built much of the automation and high-availability architecture that powers our day-to-day infrastructure and those of our customers, and has guided the business through several mass infrastructure migrations over the years.

Specialising in automation, high availability and security matters, and generally solving the nastiest problems, he operates from Australia and handles most of the high risk infrastructure tasks throughout the European night.

Luis González – Web Developer

Luis has a degree as a Technical Engineer, and has worked with various technologies. He started working with Drupal in 2012, and before that he worked with Java. He was conscious about the big challenge of moving to a totally different technology, but he very quickly found his way. He’s always looking to improve and gives his best to each project.

Q Please explain your onboarding process

We prefer an Agile approach to managing projects but we don’t have a specific methodology.

Key parts to any project we run:

Onboarding - The onboarding meeting is an opportunity to discuss details, agree on the approach, structure, governance and processes for the project. We also clarify potential risks that should be raised from the start, and agree how to mitigate them.

Responsibility - We make sure we know who has decision making and signoff responsibilities for smooth transitions between each iteration and phase of the project.

Discovery - It’s rare an initial specification is precise enough; it’s hard to fully spec a project from the start. We build in the flexibility to work together to decide next steps.

Communication - We have a variety of ways to communicate with clients and as a team.

Q Please explain how you would manage existing contracts with other suppliers we work with

It’s OK if you want to see other people. We work in an open source community, and we’re big on collaboration. We look at your specific situation with that supplier and create a tailored solution that suits you.

Q How does your company do it's testing?

This question could relate to a vast number of things we do at Code Enigma, but we always detail exactly what and how we’ll test in our proposal documents.

Q What is your standard SLA for support

We provide a detailed SLA document for each new client. The SLA depends on the service they have employed us for.

Q Does your company hold any certificates and qualifications?

We are ISO2700 and ISO9001 certified and are on the way to AWS Partnership

Q How many staff does your company have and how many would be involved in a typical development project?

We have 18 people here at Code Enigma. There are key team members who work with the client throughout their project whom you’d be introduced to before we even begin working. We all like to get involved, so you might also hear from our array of developers to our Marketing or Finance Managers. We also ensure we know the key contacts and decision makes for the project from your side.

Q Please explain how you would approach a new design and development project

We’re always excited by the possibility of working with a new client to help redesign their website into a more user-focussed and inclusive digital presence.

We know the best work is collaborative, with a clear, shared vision in the project discovery phase. Gaining an understanding of a client’s objectives, strategically and within the project, means we deliver a solution which provides a better experience and lasting impression on websites users. For an overview of our process, please see the onboarding process.

Q Does your company provide monthly face to face meetings? If so, what information would you provide

Code Enigma is a fully distributed company so we do not offer monthly face-to-face meetings per se, but our communication is second to none. Clients are invited to all relevant [online] meetings where we show our work and check we’re on the right track. It’s part of the project to collaborate with you. Where feasible, we do go on-site.

Q Please explain how your company does service reviews

We undergo monthly service reviews to ensure a continuous flow of feedback is received. We gather both quantitative and qualitative data to ensure the best information is gathered. We also execute project wrap ups and retrospectives; externally with the client and internally.

Q Why should our organisation use your services and what makes you special?

We began in 2010, when we used to call ourselves a web agency, but these days we're so much more. Our base is in the heart of London, but we made the deliberate decision to work as a distributed company, now operating across 7 countries. This means we have access to the best talent across time zones (which is also great for our responsiveness and resilience). We embrace our cultural diversity and see it as a key driver in our creativity.

We’re big enough to deliver, but small enough to keep it personal. You’ll know the whole team by the time you’ve finished working with us, because we work collaboratively and draw on the expertise of the entire business for every single project. You’ll know how we think, because honesty is one of our core values. If we recommend a technology choice, you’ll know why. If we disagree over a font selection, you’ll know why. Everything about us is transparent; we work with organisations who embrace the concept of one team pushing for the same goal.

The new homepage looks really great! It brings a much fresher look and feel to the website. [Thanks to Drupal] all the images and text are customisable, so the communications team are really happy that they can change what they want without having to ask.”
